Why is communications important in your career?
Within conservation there is a growing realisation that we need to do much more to share our messages and encourage more support and action. As a result, conservation employers are rapidly looking for people with communications skills.
They want staff who can plan communications activities, write effectively, get press and media attention, engage audiences on social media, deliver campaigns, write blogs, produce podcasts and more.
At Conservation Careers we analysed 29,767 conservation jobs, from over 100 countries, and a massive 41% explicitly wanted people with communications skills or experience. Of these, 9% (2,726) were communications specialist roles like Communications Officers. Marketing Managers or Social Media Officers.
If you want to succeed as a professional conservationist you need communications skills.
Introducing Communications Strategy Development for Conservation Projects
This is a new online course brought to you by the team at Conservation Careers. The structure of the course follows a detailed analysis of what employers are looking for when hiring conservationists, and is taught by communications expert Lloyd Gofton.
During the course you’ll learn how to:
- Develop a communications strategy. Follow a clear model to build a solid strategy foundation.
- Research the situation. Use workshopping to gather insights that shape your approach.
- Identify key audiences. Analyse and segment audiences to understand their needs.
- Develop and target messaging. Craft compelling messages tailored to each audience.Â
- Create a communications plan. Design a plan with clear goals, channels, and success metrics.
-
Complete a living communications strategy. Combine all elements into a flexible, evolving strategy.
Are you ready to become an advanced conservation communicator? We’re excited to offer 33% off the course if you join by Thursday 28th November.

Sounds really interesting. Is it aimed at project teams and project managers, or only communications staff? Our organisation already has a "coms" team, but often engagement officers are doing communication. Would this be suitable for them?
