Conservation Catalyst: Ussi Abuu Mnamengi

Today, I would like to mark a special occasion and congratulate our valued member, Ussi, on becoming the second Conservation Catalyst with WildHub. Conservation Catalysts are our Core Community members who catalyse the sharing of lessons learned by teaming up with other conservationists.

Ussi responded to our Call for Conservation Catalysts in February last year (2021) and dedicated the subsequent 12 months to interviewing conservationists to share their lessons learned with our community. In this role, he acts as a catalyst in sharing knowledge, experiences, solutions, and ideas to help others in their conservation work and enable better conservation of wildlife, contributing to our community’s overall goal.

Ussi reached the status of WildHub Conservation Catalyst after sharing his sixth lessons learned post on March 2nd, in which he interviewed Founder of VerdantLearn and E-learning expert, Lucy Tallents. During the past year, Ussi has interviewed a variety of conservationists, on the topics of career development, diversity, equity and inclusion, climate change and communication, investing in emerging environmental leaders, and sustainable development

Please join me in congratulating Ussi by adding your felicitations below!

To celebrate, I took the opportunity to ask Ussi some questions about his journey to becoming a Conservation Catalyst.

Thirza: “What benefits have you experienced from being on a journey to becoming a Conservation Catalyst with WildHub?”

Ussi: “I was able to learn, for example I got the chance to become one of the co-organizers of a WildHub 2021 festival session. I was also able to strengthen friendships, build connections and got to know different people in the world who are dedicated to making our planet earth a better place for all.

I gained knowledge in the different career paths in the environmental sector and wildlife conservation. I believe that the natural world needs our help, so I learned the best ways to communicate with other WildHub members; to sit down and discuss lessons learned. These discussions I shared with the WildHub community. My journey has not ended yet and I'm still going. I also learned about leadership, diversity, equity and inclusion, from different perspectives, and this built my ability to speak and be confident for the benefit of people and the planet.”

Thirza: “What helped you to contribute content on a regular basis and therefore helped you become a WildHub Conservation Catalyst?”

Ussi: “WildHub is the global community where I can learn new things, be open minded. People within the WildHub community always focus on helping others, equitable development, environmental sustainability, strategic thinking, innovation and action. Thirza coached me and this gave me a lot of motivation and belief that I can do it. Me and my Conservation Catalyst colleagues worked in great cooperation and solidarity, which also helped me achieve my journey.”

Thirza: “Which barriers have you experienced to contributing content to WildHub on a regular basis?”

Ussi: “I visited the different rooms on WildHub seeking advice and interviews but it was not an easy task to get answers. I also did not have modern devices to do this job, for example I grew up using a device which version is out date - many apps do not work well, so videos and pictures did not become as interesting and even the video connection was not good either.”

Thirza: “What advice would you give to other members who would like to become a WildHub Conservation Catalyst?”

Ussi: “I started from scratch but now I start from experience. Please start today from scratch, be compassionate, be accepting of others, honest, flexible and having patience, and believe that tomorrow you will start from experience. The WildHub Conservation Catalyst journey is held in the safe global WildHub community for green recovery, and COVID-19 response: together we make our planet earth a better place for all.”
