Post examples of dependencies here

That way we can keep them all together and have conversations about them

One of the exercises this week is to share examples of dependencies. Please post them as replies to this post and feel free to comment on other people’s examples, for example, you may have had a similar experience or you may have some advice to share.

EXAMPLE
Project: California condor

Incoming dependency: The project is dependent on the San Diego Wild Animal Park education department to provide a location to display the awareness posters.

Outgoing dependency: Los Angeles Zoo is dependent on this project for high quality photos of the Californian condor in the wild for their promotional material.

Beth Robinson

WildLearning Specialist, WildTeam

I'm a WildLearning Specialist with WildTeam, a bit of a odd job title. My main role is to design, deliver and organise both our online and class-based training workshops. One of the best parts of my job is meeting other conservationists and learning about the work that they do. I really enjoy geeking out reading teaching theory and thinking about ways I can more creatively and engagingly deliver learning. Before working for WildTeam I did a PhD in invasive plants and human wildlife interactions. I find it really interesting to learn about the ways people interact with nature, both when nature is being wonderful, but also when is is being a bit annoying!

The creation of an outdoor classroom on site for training workshops and forest school.

Incoming - Much of the structure was to be made from old telegraph poles donated by a telecoms company, and work could not start until they arrived.

Outgoing -  While we as the site managers were flexible in our time needs for the site to be finished, we had offered the site for use by local schools and their own forest school programmes, and so needed to complete before the start of the next term.

I've got a couple of examples to do with my hedgehog heroes of Shropshire project!

Incoming: Dependency on the British Hedgehog Preservation Society for use of their hedgehog leaflet resources. I've been depending on them to kindly send us some by post to use in the resource packs that i have given out to garden residents on how to make their gardens hedgehog friendly.

Outgoing: A local Shropshire school had a dependency on us to provide them with regular hedgehog talks/activity days as part of their John Muir Award every week. We provided a service by actually running the John Muir Awards, but also weaving in our hedgehog project to some of the activity days.

MSc dissertation on feeding hierarchies of various species of South African sunbirds.

Incoming - The project relied on over twenty local landowners to allow both researcher access (often with security codes shared) as well as feeders to be hung and maintained on the property.

Outgoing - The NGO sponsoring the project relied on the project for local outreach and to maintain a reputation for high research output.

New visitor centre and larger carpark for a conservation charity who’s aim is to connect people with nature and save species from extinctions. FYI no project/expenditure is made without having the total funds in hand (ie lessons learned: no loans or counting money chickens before they are hatched.

Incoming; start of project reliant on grant funding and approval from both State government and Federal Government.

outgoing; Project/building not able to start to break ground until the conservation charity’s self funded potion achieved

Proposed Strategic Wildlife Corridor policy

Incoming dependency – we are dependent on gaining landowners permission to access the land, which is within/adjacent to the proposed Strategic Wildlife Corridor project. Without access to sites we would not be able to survey for habitat & species and the proposed enhancements could not be tailored for the biodiversity on site. This would also impact the connectivity for species movement.

Outgoing dependency – Network Rail are dependent on us to gain biological data and landowners support for areas that are adjacent to the railway line to justify the importance of the proposed biologically enhancements.

Wind farm biodiversity action plan (BAP) raptor offset project

Incoming - Government permits to conduct baseline raptor surveys prior to the operation of the first stage of wind turbines. Vital for measuring and reporting on project impacts.

Outgoing - Wind farm financiers and biodiversity consultant reliant upon baseline data (and subsequent ongoing monitoring survey data) to report on the delivery of appropriate biodiversity offset measures compensating for the wind farm to uphold IFC environmental performance standards.

In my current work in the planning department of a local authority for example...

Incoming dependency - I am reliant on accurate biodiversity data from the local environmental records centre on species and habitats, e.g. records of protected species such as bats, nesting birds, great crested newts, dormouse, etc. to do my job properly - so that I can ensure that my comments on planning applications are based on the most up to date information for a site/area.

Outgoing dependency - my planning officer colleagues in development management are reliant on me providing them with specialist biodiversity advice with which to use as part of the determination process. In some cases, they will not be able to determine a planning application without my input, e.g. where there are protected species present and I have to ensure that proposals for mitigation and compensation are appropriate.

Not conservation-related but I have a couple of examples from my previous job in the natural/organic cosmetic industry.

Incoming: Production of organic reef-safe sun lotions for our clients could only be started once the bulk passed the UV filter test by a third-party lab, ensuring the lotion was safe for use by consumers

Outgoing: Our client needed to send the finished sun lotions to their stockists by a strict deadline for sale, so they depended on us to ensure testing, production, packing and shipping were not delayed. If there were delays we had to do some serious problem-solving!

Non-conservation examples are very welcome. Although as you are talking about reef friendly sun lotion it is sort of conservation! Interesting topic.

Coral Reef Restoration

Incoming - I am dependant on the dive centre to allow us to store our dive gear and use their dive tanks.

Outgoing - The Raa Atoll Manta Trust Project Managers are reliant on us recording Manta sightings and regularly sending data to help them build a picture of the Manta population and movements in the atoll.

A project to manage invasive species throughout the Wear catchment.

Incoming dependency - meeting management targets depends on landowners agreeing to work with us and allowing us to carry out invasive species control on their land.

Outgoing dependency - partner organisations depend on us mapping invasive species presence throughout the catchment accurately so a detailed picture of the distribution and potential transport pathways across the whole of the North East can be created.

Improving animal husbandry in sheep farming so that livestock owners less impacted by loss to wolves:

Incoming: We were dependent on a Tbilisi-based Veterinary Association to deliver the training.

Outgoing: As the training was to be delivered in a remote area, the trainers were dependent on our project to provide transport and logistics.

Incoming - The project relies on access to academic journals through an institutional licence. If the licencing changes or is cancelled it would impact on the project.

Outgoing - An NGO partner relies on our research outputs, if we do not complete certain project milestones it would impact on their outreach campaigns and integrity.

Bonobo project in the DRC:

Incoming dependency: The project is dependent on drafting contracts with the local villages to allow the use of their parts of the forest as a protected research area where hunting is prohibited. Contracts have to be renegotiated every few years.

Outgoing dependency: Other projects hosted by WWF for example, relied on the good relationships this project has created with the local villages, to build on the established trust and start new projects in this area.

Examples from a couple of projects I am currently working on:

Cool waters (tree planting)

Incoming dependency - I have a project which is planned to plant riparian trees throughout the river catchment. The project is dependent on  a project partner (another charity) supplying the right amount and variety of native saplings and for me to organise the volunteers to help with the planting!

Another incoming dependency the project relies on is that there is land available for us to plant that is suitable for woodland creation.

Carbon connects

Outgoing- other project partners across the EU are dependent on us for producing and implementing a supply chain model for growing sphagnum moss.

Farming Together with Nature Project

Incoming: The project relied upon the continued support from land owners to offer permission and access to land for the completion of farmland bird surveys throughout the project

Outgoing: Habitat management advise was given to these landowners which allowed many to become eligible for an environmental funding scheme, therefore getting reimbursed for money spent to benefit wildlife

Related to Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels.

Incoming - We are dependent on gaining landowner consent for staff and volunteers to be able to carry out control and monitoring activities on their properties.

Outgoing - If landowners want to carry out their own control work and receive government funding to do that, they are dependent on Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels providing a Supporting Statement for their Forestry Grant Scheme application.

Sorry for the blank posts - not sure what was happening there! I also couldn't post a reply to Beth's post so hopefully it'll work this time.... here's my example ;-)

A few years ago, I volunteered to work at an organic farm in Ecuador.

An incoming dependency for this project is the number of volunteers available each month as this would determine the work that could be carried out, how it could be prioritised and how quickly it could be completed.

An outgoing dependency would be the local people and other projects supported by the farm - there was a paper recycling project, an organic shrimp farm, a reforestation project and two local schools that all relied on the success of the farm.
