4: Roles
Do something and focus on the impact of the project on the community which we aim to serve.
I think its very important to embrace change in everything we do in life, especially nowadays with very dynamic environments we are living in. And that is why I voted for that one and I hope more and more people starting seeing things this way that many things will change in the next years and we have to learn to adapt and quickly by embracing the changes.
Taking responsibilities is very cardinal in one's life. It helps develop integrity, maturity, and resilience. Owning your actions meaning you learn from your mistakes and improve your decision-making skills. Your actions can inspire and motivate those around you to also take responsibility, creating a culture of accountability and mutual respect.
While I love the idea of "do something" as my top choice, I think do no harm is even more important. Do something as long as you have no reason to believe it will do more damage instead. However, if the worst case scenario is that it may be ineffective or simply not the "best," then just go ahead instead of continually striving toward perfection or certainty that will never be achieved.
If I could add one principle, it would be communicate! Communicate with your team, manager, and stakeholders. Do not leave assumptions or allow teams to become siloed as this makes the best use of resources and prevents duplicate or contradictory efforts.
That's a great idea. I agree with you about clear and open communication.
Totally agree with the communication principle - critical!
It's hard to say; all of them are important. If I have to choose, I would emphasize focusing on impact and responsibility. Conservation faces many challenges, but with a positive determination, we can bring about significant change. I often see things in a greater picture, such as programmes and time always running faster. So that's why I also think taking responsibility goes hand in hand with focusing on impact. It can save time and energy and enhance effectiveness.
Totally agree; these were also my top two! I think do something is extremely difficult if team members have not taken responsibility, which is why that topped the list for me.
I think all of the Principles are important as a group, as without one of them you would not be-able to run a project efficiently. I do like 'Do Something ' because it makes me want to get on with a project without delay which is good for the animals or plants.
I chose "Do no harm". As a veterinary surgeon, this is also the first principle in my job, and so it has generally translated into my whole life.
I chose take responsibility as my top principle. It speaks to some of the challenges I've had working with Biocultural Conservation Institute. The entire board has a clear idea of where we'd like to go as an organization, but without defined roles and tasks assigned to team members, some of the other principles like do something and focus on impact become difficult to realize. When there is structure and a sense of ownership over activities, it becomes much easier to move forward.
If I added a principle, it would be something along the lines of seek support. Many conservation impacts have been achieved globally. Find the people who have paved the way to success and mimic that work, rather than starting completely from scratch. This principle would also apply to the local community. Which stakeholders in the community are not afraid to tell you when something will or will not work, and are able to connect you to relevant contacts and provide project backing (financial or otherwise)? Seek support.
"Do something" and "focus on Impact" I think are the most proactive principles and it well covers the other principles.
It is always important to have role players with clearly defined roles so that if anything goes wrong there will be someone who come forward and say yes I failed or I did well. Hence taking responsibility is important, without that the project will suffer as everyone will start pointing fingures
I would add: keep it simple
I do agree with the "Do something" principle and its importance, however i am more inclined to the "Do no harm" Principle as its opposite is whats been happening the world-over. The planet together with its biodiversity, Flora and Fauna has been on the decline for a while now and having projects recognizing this with the weight it deserves goes to restoring balance and more positive outcomes benefiting all in the end.
A principle i would like to add would be " Be open minded". This is to the different personalities that exist either within the team and without. Getting to understand this will bring on better efficiency, clear communication, adaptability and create motivation on a daily and an amazing work experience for all
