Free Training! part 1: The Key Principle to Getting Hired in Wildlife Careers
Do you want a career in wildlife, conservation, or the environment, but have no idea how to get it? Or have you struggled getting interviews despite applying to dozens, maybe even hundreds of jobs?
This field is NOT like others. It’s not like becoming a doctor or a lawyer, where you follow a series of laid-out steps. In fact, most career advice from other fields does not apply, and the steps can vary a lot depending on what kind of job you ultimately want!
I know firsthand that it’s frustrating, and that’s why I’m sharing with you the proven 3-part framework I’ve created from my 20+ years in the wildlife profession that works with any career goal in these fields. It’s been tried and tested with the dozens of students I’ve mentored who’ve landed permanent jobs, field assistant positions, internships, graduate assistantships, and more all over the world, and I’m sharing it with you for free.
Join me, Stephanie Manka, Ph.D. (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist who has been conducting research, studying in, and working across different wildlife professions over the past two decades and in multiple countries, in this three-part training:
From Passion to Profession: The 3 Essentials to Securing a Wildlife, Conservation, or Environmental Career.
Yesterday, we covered part 1: The Key Principle to Getting Hired in Wildlife Careers
Here, we set the foundation. Approaching your wildlife and related careers for success, that is, getting hired your way up to your dream job, is kind of like building a house.
You start with the foundation.
You're probably eager to get straight to the framework or tips and tricks, but if you don't have a strong foundation, the house topples over. Without the proper context, the framework or any tips or tricks just won't work.
And for a lot of people, their career is built on a shaky foundation. That is, stories and misconceptions about what they THINK is going to happen to them based on what they hear.
But just because what is happening to most people doesn't mean that is what has to happen to you!
So, we need to remove the old foundation before we can lay a new one.
In Training 1, we covered:
-
What is possible for you when the framework is applied to dismantle some of the stories that you've been told or believe. These students are examples, yet they represent years of this framework working!
-
The core premise for getting hired in wildlife fields
-
How I came to this realization through my personal journey in 17 years of working in this field - you'll find out the advice I was given no longer applies, and where I went wrong
-
The missteps in my Ph.D. that made it challenging for me to land a permanent job despite a decade or more of experience, and how this applies to you
-
What I started to do to change my results and get a 30% interview rate - meaning an interview for 1 out of every 3 jobs I applied to!
-
Identifying where you are when it comes to the core premise: how hireable are you for your ultimate dream job?
