About Nicola Carruthers

I am a Zambian ecologist, mother of two, and rather nomadic across the country with homes in Lusaka and the Lower Luangwa Valley. I have read at the University of Guelph, Rhodes University, University of Pretoria and University of Edinburgh.  I have worked with orphaned elephants, trained DNPW scouts to ride horses for anti-poaching, started setting up a research department for an NGO, run a private wildlife estate and lodge, managed a biodiversity monitoring programme, and piloted a community conservation programme, and a few other things in between. I alerted the giraffe community to the presence of Luangwa Giraffe some 100km south of their previously-accepted range and keep a personal log of giraffe I encounter on Giraffe Spotter (a WildMe project).  In 2023, after having my last child, I started my own company so I could focus on what really matters to me: appropriate fire management across Zambia (and the Miombo ecoregion).  I also offer wildlife management, human-wildlife conflict and coexistence assessment, and biodiversity monitoring services.

I am a firm believer in decentralized ownership of natural resources and bottom-up management and decision-making. I also believe that a lot of what we put down to global climate change (i.e. caused by someone else, far away), in Zambia can be explained by local problems, and addressed quite easily/simply with local solutions.

I am on the 2024 committees for BirdWatch Zambia (BWZ) and Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECSZ) Lusaka Branch.

I joined WildHub to build on my existing skills and connect with likeminded people.
