The IKI Large Grants respective thematic priorities are based on decisions arising from international negotiations conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The priority areas also reflect the strategic objectives and geographical focus for the funding programme as outlined in the “Strategy of the International Climate Initiative up to 2030”.

With regard to the geographical orientation, it is planned to integrate specific thematic priorities that strengthen bilateral cooperation with the IKI priority countries.

Depending on the thematic focus, IKI funding per project may range between 5 and 20 million euros.

The start of the first ideas competition for the IKI Large Grants is currently planned for this year's UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place in Brazil from 10 to 21 November 2025. The final decision is subject to the availability of funds in the upcoming federal budget.
