On World Environment Day, and on the 5th anniversary of the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime, we will host an online UN Ocean Conference side-event on “Addressing Marine Wildlife Trafficking to Protect Our Oceans”.

📅 5 June 2025
⏰ 11.00-12.00pm CET
📍 ONLINE https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Mcf3-IW5SeSLtxCgu0tDXw#/registration

Wildlife trafficking, including of marine species, is one of the most profitable transnational crimes, valued at USD 69–199 billion annually. Illegal fishing alone causes global losses of up to USD 36.4 billion per year. Trafficking of marine species and illegal fishing have serious consequences for marine conservation and food security. Yet, despite the scale of these impacts, there is a gap in the existing international legal framework for preventing and combating these crimes.

This side-event will highlight the urgent need for a dedicated UNTOC protocol to combat wildlife trafficking, with a particular focus on its potential role in addressing marine wildlife crime. It will explore how gaps in national and international laws hinder enforcement, with case studies showing where greater cooperation, enforcement and intelligence sharing are needed.

Speakers:
● John Scanlon AO, Chair - Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime
● Daniel Kachelriess, Marine Law and Policy Expert
● Yvonne Sadovy, Honorary Professor - University of Hong Kong
● Stan Shea, Marine Programme Director - BLOOM
● Russell Gray, Head of Data - Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime
● Dr Vanessa Pirotta, Rapiscan/Honorary Scientific Associate - Taronga Conservation Society Australia
