Conservation is a huge, expanding, diversifying professional industry, offering a dizzying array of conservation job types. On Conservation Careers to date we’ve listed over 50,000 conservation jobs which cover over 15,000 different job titles!

This can make it really easy for aspiring conservationists to feel confused, overwhelmed and lost when they're seeking to break into the sector.

That's why we’ve mapping the conservation sector and the 11 key conservation roles, using 10 years of experience at Conservation Careers and our latest research.

Our aim is to give aspiring conservationists and career switchers a map to navigate the sector, explore the possibilities and find their path.

We also looked at 100s of early career jobs across all 11 roles and found some surprising highlights...
  • 100% of the key conservation roles usually require relevant experience.
  • 0% of the key conservation roles usually require a master’s degree.
  • The transferable skills employers value most are communication, organisation and teamwork.
  • The behaviours conservation employers value most are flexibility and initiative.

Does having a 'map' support you as a conservationist? Were you surprised by any of the highlights? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for sharing Kristi & Nick! I really like the tables that you developed to help create an overview of the different roles. Would you perhaps be able to share one in your post as a 'teaser'? Many thanks in advance!
