Yesterday we celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity, where we reminded that every living organism from towering forests to the smallest creatures beneath our feet plays a role in sustaining life on Earth. Biodiversity is not just about protecting wildlife; it is about protecting our food systems, our climate, our soils, our water, and ultimately our future. Yet, every day, habitats disappear, ecosystems are degraded, and countless species are lost before they are even known to science. In the midst of this crisis, some of the most important organisms remain invisible and forgotten. Soil invertebrates, especially myriapods such as millipedes, quietly maintain the health of our ecosystems. They recycle organic matter, enrich soils, support nutrient cycling, act as climate bioindicator, are source of proteins and help sustain the very foundation of terrestrial life. Without them, forests weaken, soils decline, and ecosystem balance is threatened.

Conservation must go beyond protecting only the visible and charismatic species. The future of biodiversity also depends on safeguarding the hidden life beneath our feet. Protect biodiversity. Protect ecosystems. Protect invertebrates because even the smallest creatures hold the planet together.
