Using SMART Connect to Improve Wildlife Protection Data Management in Ethiopia
Background
Across Ethiopia, rangers collect essential field data daily, yet much of it remains underutilized due to manual processes and limited system integration. Currently, only two parks, Nechisar National Park and Simien Mountains National Park, use the SMART desktop application to monitor wildlife and habitats. There is also no centralized platform, such as SMART Connect, in use for data sharing across protected areas.
We initiated the deployment of SMART Connect using existing infrastructure to bridge this gap. Although the attempt demonstrated strong potential, technical and resource limitations prevented full implementation.
Why this matters
- Delayed data limits timely response to threats such as poaching
- Lack of integration reduces the effectiveness of conservation planning
- Field data is not fully leveraged for decision-making
With SMART Connect, patrol data can be synchronized and analyzed in near real time, significantly improving conservation outcomes.
Key Challenges
- Limited access to advanced technical expertise (Linux, PostgreSQL, Docker)
- Weak or unreliable connectivity in some remote protected areas
- Insufficient funding for infrastructure and system deployment
- Need for capacity building among rangers and staff
Funding opportunity
We are seeking partners and donors to support the implementation and scaling of SMART Connect across protected areas in Ethiopia. Your support will directly contribute to:
- Establishing a reliable server and network infrastructure
- Deploying and configuring SMART Connect systems
- Training rangers and conservation staff in digital data collection
- Strengthening real-time monitoring and rapid response capabilities
Expected impact
- Improved real-time visibility of field activities
- Faster and more informed decision-making
- Strengthened protection of wildlife and habitats
- Scalable model for other low-resource conservation areas
Call to action
We welcome collaboration with donors, conservation organizations, and technical experts to help bring this initiative to life. What partnerships or funding opportunities exist to support SMART Connect deployment in low-resource environments?
