Rebecca Garrity

Researcher, public speaker, Seeking freelance/remote contracts

My interest in the natural world led me to pursue a career in wildlife and environmental conservation. I have led marine mammal surveys in international waters and costal litter pick audits in New Zealand to collect data which in turn is used to inform government decision making. I am experienced in conservation research, surveying, data entry, and wildlife photography and am seeking current remote contracts. I enjoy traveling and "giving back" to the places I visit. I have worked on conservation and wildlife rescue projects in China, Australia, New Zealand, Greece, and UK. Since Covid, I took up a new skill in permaculture, using natural systems thinking to live a more sustainable lifestyle. I have assisted with the startup of an urban market garden through the Canterbury Permaculture Institute where I had a hand in project planning and site supervision. I have worked and volunteered for various non-government organisations. I value their views and goals and I enjoy working in a field where I can combine them with my passion for nature, travel, and environmental education.

Senior Consultant, Empowering Climate Solutions

Hello!  I have worked in natural resource management and environmental education for several years.  In 2022 I moved from Washington State to southern Belize and joined Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) to complete a number of capacity buidling projects and an impact assessment of TIDE's high school scholarship program (big impact!).  Along the way, I assisted with grant writing for both organizational sustainability and scientific research grants.  I completed the contract with TIDE and am now working as a consultant for Empowering Climate Solutions, based in southern Belize.  As a natural resources professional I think every day about the impacts of climate change on everything (!) and as an educator, my goal is always to empower others to take command of their future.  I love diving and baby turtles, and when I'm not working I enjoy walks with our dog, yoga, and cooking. Head of Community Health & Conservation Programs, Conservation Through Public Health

I’m a Ugandan public health and One Health specialist connecting human, wildlife, and ecosystem health. My journey began in a rural village, where health was only seen in clinics. Working with Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) taught me how communities, wildlife, and ecosystems are inseparably linked. I lead programs across Uganda’s protected areas with Village Health and Conservation Teams, youth, women’s groups, and reformed poachers to implement disease surveillance, biosecurity, and community-led conservation solutions. I hold an MPH and a postgraduate certificate in Global Health (Human-Animal-Ecosystem Interface, University of Geneva), contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and present at global forums, including the World One Health Congress. I believe community ownership is not an add-on—it’s the intervention. One Health is not a theory; it’s people, relationships, and shared responsibility. 🔗 LinkedIn Profile

Terrestrial Research & Monitoring Officer, Belize Audubon Society

I have been in the field of conservation for more than 8 years. After completing my bachelor's programme in Natural Resources Management, I joined the Consultoria de asesores Forestales S.A. de C.V. in Mexico focusing on the estimation of tree's biomass and volume for the sustainable use of forest product. I later furthered my studies and joined the Double Degree Master's Programme "ENREM" in Environmental Science at Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico and Natural Resources Management & Development at TH Köln, Germany. My master's thesis focused on carbon sequestration in the soil. Currently, I am the Terrestrial Researcher at Belize Audubon Society. In the process of my professional growth, I have seen that Project Management has become very important not just in the business sector but also in conservation. The effective use of tools for the management of resources will assist in the overall efficiency from planning to reporting.

Studying an MA in Anthrozoology part-time at Exeter (remote). My final project is studying vocalisations of critically endangered captive Javan Green Magpies and how we can use bioacoustics to inform welfare and understanding.
