Embracing Mangrove Conservation: A Global Imperative in the Climate Crisis

Amidst the swift climate shifts, it's crucial to recognize the immense value of world mangroves along with the mangroves of United Arab Emirates (UAE).

These coastal wonders don't just stand as natural barriers against rising seas levels but they play a significant role to trap carbon and also nurture a rich variety of life. These diverse mangroves provide significant ecosystem services like carbon sequestration (a pivotal service in climate regulation). Additionally, they function as significant nesting grounds, flood mitigation, prevent erosion, and serve as crucial habitats for a diverse range of wildlife.

However, it is very unfortunate to report that these mangroves all across the world are in serious trouble and facing survival threats, largely due to human activities and the effects of climate change. While it is evident that the global mangrove cover has shrunk by about 3.4% since 1996, efforts are underway to protect these diverse mangroves all across the world for a sustainable future. This includes the efforts by Environment Protection Authority- Ras Al Khaimah and other Federal Agencies to reverse this trend and protect these sensitive and vital ecosystems.

Mangroves play the role of superheroes in carbon sequestration, surpassing other plants in their remarkable ability to absorb and store carbon effectively from the atmosphere. But, if these mangroves are destroyed or disappeared, the carbon will further significantly exacerbate climate change.

While considering the importance and significant services of these mangroves, Environment Protection Development Authority (EPDA)- Ras Al Khaimah, a governmental organization dedicated to environmental protection, along with other Federal Agencies are working with zeal to protect these ecologically important ecosystems. EPDA have partnered with the NGO the Climate Tribe to organize annual mangrove plantation drives in Khor Mazhami, a Wetland Reserve in the Ras Al Khaimah Emirate of UAE. This collaborative effort underscores their commitment to consistent mangrove restoration, which provides diverse environmental benefits and services like carbon sequestration. The Climate Tribe also implements initiatives like plastic collections and cleaning drives, (for more info see https://theclimatetribe.com/en). Collaborative endeavours like the recent mangrove planting event in Khor Mazahmi underscore a collective dedication to restoring and safeguarding these invaluable habitats. With authorities like Environmental Protection and Development Authority, The Climate Tribe at the forefront, we are forging a path towards a more resilient future.

Through such initiatives, I've come to understand the critical role of mangrove conservation, particularly in carbon sequestration, climate regulation, flood control, and other ecosystem services, highlighting their importance beyond coastal protection (Suhail Bashir, Environmental Consultant, United Arab Emirates)

By prioritizing mangrove conservation, EPDA-Ras Al Khaimah isn't just protecting its local ecosystems but also contributing substantial positive impact on the global fight against climate change. Let's continue to champion these efforts, ensuring a brighter tomorrow for our planet and all its inhabitants.

Let's unite to nurture mangroves and support EPDA for a sustainable future
