Distance sampling is a powerful statistical method for estimating species density and/or population size from sightings of unmarked animals on survey transects or point counts.  It takes into account that you don't always detect the species you're interested in even when they are present, and allows you to determine which ecological or human factors affect density across your landscape or through time

This part-time online course will run from 02 to 08 February 2026, and requires 3-6 hours of study whenever it suits you within that week


Later in February we will run two further Distance sampling courses:

  1. Survey design
  2. Analyse sightings using R
