Hello there

I am Esther and I'm the conservation manager for Fire Island Conservation

I joined WildHub this month after registering for a Project Management for Wildlife Conservation training course with WildTeam. I am keen to meet like-minded conservationists and network, possibly finding new partners.

My main responsibilities with Fire Island Conservation are the establishment and management of a variety of community upliftment and marine conservation projects. Our main focus is to protect the turtle populations and vulnerable marine life around Ilha do Fogo. The island itself is based in the Zambezia Province of Mozambique, but we have a hospitality partner and also manage conservation efforts around the locations of their properties in both Mozambique and South Africa.

I'm hoping to make connections with conservationists and researchers also involved in the marine environment. Although I have worked in marine conservation for many years, I have only been involved in very specific projects and my knowledge is limited. I want to expand my learnings and find out how better to manage the projects to see them to their full potential. I also hope I can help others to learn more about what's happening in southern Africa, and maybe give them scope to expand some of their own projects to this biodiversity wonder of the world.

Which partnerships are you looking to make?

We have a unique little island that's unexplored so keen to find researchers who want to consider projects there on the coral reef species or megafauna. To continue fund the efforts to make it a safe haven for turtle populations, we offer SCUBA retreats on the island, which researchers etc can also use as a base.

Hi Esther, you're welcome. I'm interested in the outcome of how your Organization follows up on communities empowered with alternative income and protein sources to poaching; do you have data on the success rates?
