Justin Birkhoff

Vertebrate Conservation Coordinator, Global Center for Species Survival - Indianapolis Zoo

I am an enthusiastic and progressive conservation professional with over 15 years of experience in zoological institutions and conservation non-profits. I currently work as part of a unique partnership between the IUCN SSC and the Indianapolis Zoo as part of the Global Center for Species Survival. Throughout my career, I have focused on the role of zoos as conservation organizations, serving as a bridge between in situ and ex situ conservation. I am a firm supporter of the IUCN’s One Plan Approach to conservation. My range of experience provides a broad foundation to draw from and offers unique insights for problem-solving and partnership engagement. I have experience working for and with domestic and international conservation non-profits. My focus includes supporting the development of conservation skills, utilizing innovative tools, technologies, and approaches to tackle conservation challenges, and emphasizing the contributions of local communities to wildlife conservation. I strongly believe in the power of storytelling as a conservation tool. I am eager to connect with other conservationists and offer them support, skills, and training to aid in their ongoing work.
Flavia Manieri

WildHub Community Advocates Coordinator|Interdisciplinary Researcher, Uppsala University

Since July 2025, I have been serving as the Community Advocates Coordinator at WildHub, where I coordinate initiatives to engage, support, and empower our community advocates in advancing WH’s mission. Beyond WildHub, I wear a few different hats. I work as a researcher and lecturer in Sweden, teaching courses on environmental law, political and historical ecology, and disaster management. I also mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students, collaborate with faculty members, and contribute to ongoing research projects. I’m passionate about giving back through volunteer work. I support a few conservation and animal welfare organisations with research and advocacy to help drive positive change. When I’m not working, you’ll find me hiking forest trails with my dog or enjoying a good cup of coffee.

Liane Fulford

Training Specialist, WildTeam

I'm Liane, and I am a WildLearning Specialist at WildTeam! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all! For the last few years, I've been working in Seychelles, focusing on island and marine conservation efforts, particularly coral restoration and turtle nesting monitoring. If you ask me questions about coral, be prepared for me to get very nerdy about it! Prior to that, I was managing a project in Northern Thailand, where I worked closely with a local community to set up ethical elephant experiences in their village. In my free time, I love running and hiking, and being anywhere in nature. I have also learnt to freedive in the last few years and enjoy doing that when possible. I'm really interested in talking to different people and learning from them and their unique experiences.

Mareth Kotze

Online Events and Technical Coordinator, Leadership for Conservation in Africa

My name is Mareth Kotze, and my passion for nature has been with me since childhood. Though I grew up in the urban environment of Cape Town, life initially led me into the hospitality industry. In 2018, I had the opportunity to work at a guesthouse in Pretoria, where a chance connection changed my path. The guesthouse owner's husband, the CEO of I, recognized my potential and invited me to join their team. And as they say, the rest is history.   I now serve as the Online Events and Technical Coordinator for LCA, primarily working with ShareScreen Africa (SSA) – an initiative designed to create a knowledge-sharing network that inspires and equips students and young conservationists. Rather than competing with universities, SSA complements existing curricula by exposing students to cutting-edge African science and conservation thinking.   Through SSA, we facilitate virtual classes, workshops, and hybrid events that actively engage students. Our goal is to connect conservation experts with tertiary classrooms across Africa, fostering meaningful discussions and learning experiences.   This role has truly opened up the world of conservation for me. My passion has only grown, and I’ve had the privilege of learning across various conservation fields. Though currently based in Cape Town, I’ve been fortunate to travel to parts of East Africa and look forward to expanding my horizons across the continent. I believe this platform and experience will continue to open exciting new doors for me.

I co-founded WildHub, a community of nature conservation professionals, in 2020 and work as their Community Lead. I am furthermore on the Advisory Board of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) at the University of Kent where I obtained my PhD on capacity development for conservation in 2022.
