Cleo has an M.Sc. in Applied Animal Behaviour & Animal Welfare from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (University of Edinburgh) and a B.Sc. in Animal Biology from Stirling University (UK). She has extensive experience in assisting and managing complex research projects for multiple research institutes and private laboratories. She has built up a strong technical background in the South African Bushveld deciphering wild animal behaviour and bio-acoustics, in cancer research and behind an electron microscope looking for a link between positive animal welfare practices and the abundance of microglia (the brain’s primary innate immune cells).
My career in conservation, research, and community relations started with the CLP-funded Calayan Rail Project as a field volunteer in 2008, focusing on its Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns. I then followed it up with a wildlife surveying stint for the Tungtong River Conservation Project in Antipolo and as a mountain guide for a National Geographic-funded research study conducted by Dr. Tim Gallaher of the University of Hawaii. I was also the lead researcher for BAN Toxics in 2013, where I surveyed several artisanal small-scale gold mining communities across the country, measuring gaseous mercury emissions, conducting focus group discussions, and writing academic reports. I was a former Education and Research Head of the UP Mountaineers, where I was often deployed as a pro-bono lecturer in subjects such as ecotourism, basic mountaineering courses, and local guides training. Since my UPM appointment to helm its Sierra Madre Nature Trail Project in 2019, I have led multi-day trail explorations, liaised with local government units, consulted with indigenous peoples’ communities and leadership, and maintained a network of shareholders across the Sierra Madre. Quite recently, I was also involved with the Mt. Balagbag Reforestation and Empowerment project of the Philippine Parks and Biodiversity Conservation Society.
At this time, I work as a project coordinator for the Talarak Foundation's Mindoro Warty Pig Conservation Project. I am the consulting Reforestation Manager for the SJDM Carbon Forest as well, working with Earth Recovery Action. In between and around these two, I craft grant and project proposals for the Sierra Madre Conservation Society, which I co-founded 2024.
I'm a coral reef ecologist who's left academia and now runs a video production company in London. Our work spans films of all kinds but our main passion and focus is in creating documentary film and meaningful visual stories for charities, projects and people that are trying to make the world a better place. We've spent the last 5 years working on some amazing projects from a BBC World documentary following the miraculous recovery of an 80 year old explorer from COVID, who then went on to climb Cornwall's largest mountain. More recent projects include a week long trip to the mountains of Portugal where we were following the work of a local NGO who's fighting the rising wildfires through the planting of native woodland and trees. I'm open to speaking with and collaborating on projects across the world to use our skills to help tell stories that matter.
I am a third-year student at African Leadership University pursuing a Bachelor of Global Challenges degree, graduating in June 2024. I'm passionate about working in the environmental and wildlife conservation industry to use skills gained from my tertiary education and make a difference as a research professional. I previously worked as a research intern on Land use activities at ALU School of wildlife conservation. And I gained hands-on experience working with writing case studies, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and working and communicating professionally.
