I have a long-standing background in people and organisational development in combination with conservation in South Africa. I graduated from DICE in 2019 and am especially interested in creating progress where conservation gets stuck due to human-human conflict, particularly on moral grounds.
Working towards improving the efficacy of conservation efforts through technology, best practices, and data flow.
My global research interest is conservation biology with the primary objective of understanding drivers of biodiversity loss. I focus primarily on plants to understand key ecological questions related to species invasion, climate change, but also molecular ecology, phylogenetics and DNA Barcoding and Metabarcoding. Although my primary research has focused on plants, I also collaborate on projects studying animal ecology. Using data on global standards of the IUCN for species, and ecosystems Red Lists and Key Biodiversity Areas, I bridge the divide between data science and policy through supporting African countries to report on both national and international biodiversity commitments.
I'm a freelance scientist/consultant looking for my next project collaboration. I'm a biologist and geographer by education/training. My primary experience is in East and southern Africa but I work on broad projects remotely. My latest publication was on mountain goats and crowd sourcing community photography to investigate phenology.
I am a lover of all wildlife and consider myself a generalist with many interests. I'm currently an amateur herpetologist trying to navigate my understanding in my new country of residence. I'm a life long learner and looking for my next collaboration. I'm currently trying to learn R in the hopes of improving my ability to work on future projects.
I have 25yrs experience living and working across ten African countries in the Horn of Africa, East and southern Africa - mostly working for international NGO's on Protected Area (PA) and national level conservation programs. More recently I am the Founder and Managing Director of Conservation Synergies - a contracting and consulting company that supports governments, donors, NGO's and other partners to look at conservation problems and issues from new angles, and to learn from experts from other fields.
I am also currently working part-time for the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime as as a Senior Analyst into the Illegal Wildlife Trade in East and Southern Africa, and more generally into illicit flows in northern Mozambique.
I am a bat researcher, since 2012. Currently a student of doctoral studies on the genetics of bat's ectoparasites. I prefer fieldwork over office time :). Love hiking, caving, sports, and outdoors.
