HERP FAUNA FOUNDATION UGANDA

BACKGROUND

Herp fauna Foundation is a community based organisation that primarily focuses on the rampant destruction of habitats, fighting against illegal wildlife activities and snakebites as neglected tropical in Uganda through bringing together various professions to raise awareness and sensitization on combatting snake bite cases in communities through animal rescues and training people on preventive methods.

VISION

A safer Uganda with minimized snake bite cases

Mission

To minimize snake bite cases in Uganda through converging various professions to raise awareness and combatting snake bites as a neglected tropical disease in communities.

Proposed project description

Uganda is home to over 171 snake species of which about 2-5% are venomous (poisonous). Most of these snakes are found in swamps, lakes, forests, savannas and in communities around these areas. Over 500 cases of snake bite cases are reported annually across Uganda of which this is just 30 % of the known cases. Many cases go unreported in communities and those reported are never saved as it’s reported that over 92% of Ugandan doctors don’t know how to manage snake bite cases.

Objectives

❖ To conduct sensitization about snake bite management and awareness in communities

❖ To respond to rescues and evacuation of snakes and snake bite victims in Ugandan communities

❖ To conduct venom extraction, research and training

❖ To conduct community based specialized hands on training courses on snake avoidance, snake bite first aid case management, prevention and snake identification.

❖ To promote income generation activities among locals in areas where snake bite is a problem.

❖ venom extraction, research and training will promote education of masses on importance of venom in their day to day life and promote innovative plans among community members

❖ Conducting community based specialized hands on training courses on snake avoidance, basic snake bite first aid case management, prevention and snake identification will enable health workers respond faster to cases hence saving lives.

❖ To promote income generation activities among locals in areas where snake bite is a problem.
