Christine

Senior Investigator, Kenya Wildlife Service

I am a Senior Investigator at KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) and a passionate advocate for biodiversity conservation with more than 10 years of experience in this field. Prior to my current role, I served as the faculty head of Wildlife Education at the Kenya Wildlife Service Law Enforcement Academy. My research interests center around natural resource economics, ecosystem services matrix flow, marine ecosystem valuation, and analyzing issues in a changing world, such as trends in wildlife species population, illegal wildlife trade, unregulated and unreported fishing, climate change, marine pollution, community livelihoods, and ocean governance. I have extensive cross-cultural experience collaborating with both international and local partners on biodiversity conservation initiatives. My interest in biodiversity conservation was sparked at a young age of 10 when I developed a deep love for nature, leading me to pursue a BSc in Wildlife Management at Moi University, Kenya. Later, I earned an M.A. degree in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management at Nairobi University, Kenya, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management at the University of Nairobi. These educational pursuits are driven by my passion to find solutions to biodiversity loss not only in Kenya but also globally. As part of various professional associations, I am a member of the Conservation Finance Alliance (CFA), the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), Women In Marine Science (WIMS), and IUCN - Commission on Education and Communication Specialist Group. My specific interest in Blue carbon ecosystems was sparked during my attendance at the Blue Economy conference in 2018, held in Nairobi, Kenya. I take great pleasure in exploring innovative ideas and mentoring future thinkers. Every day, I am deeply concerned about the future of humanity if the threats to our environment continue without restraint. Thus, my primary focus lies in implementing policies and regulations that prioritize and involve local communities in conservation efforts.

Joyce Tuyishime

Student, African Leadership University

I am excited to have joined the Wild Hub platform as it provides a platform for me to engage with like-minded individuals who are passionate about environmental conservation. As a final year student at African Leadership University, majoring in Global Challenges with a focus on environmental conservation, I am committed to ensuring the protection of endangered plant species and the promotion of sustainable conservation practices. My interest in environmental conservation has led me to work on various research projects, including assessing the impacts of exotic plant species on the ecology of one of the National Parks in Rwanda. Through this project, I was able to gain insights into the complexities involved in managing invasive species and the need for a sustainable approach to conservation. I also had the privilege of working on pre-impact assessments for the expansion of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This experience allowed me to understand the importance of incorporating the perspectives of local communities in conservation initiatives. Recently, I worked on a project with the Capitals Coalition on sustainable and impact analysis, where I was involved in a case study. This experience enabled me to develop a deeper understanding of the need to integrate economic, social, and environmental considerations in conservation efforts. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with the National Geographic Society and he Nature Conservancy on a freshwater and community conservation externship. This experience allowed me to gain valuable insights into the complexities of freshwater management and the importance of engaging with local communities in conservation efforts.

Senior Consultant, Empowering Climate Solutions

Hello!  I have worked in natural resource management and environmental education for several years.  In 2022 I moved from Washington State to southern Belize and joined Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) to complete a number of capacity buidling projects and an impact assessment of TIDE's high school scholarship program (big impact!).  Along the way, I assisted with grant writing for both organizational sustainability and scientific research grants.  I completed the contract with TIDE and am now working as a consultant for Empowering Climate Solutions, based in southern Belize.  As a natural resources professional I think every day about the impacts of climate change on everything (!) and as an educator, my goal is always to empower others to take command of their future.  I love diving and baby turtles, and when I'm not working I enjoy walks with our dog, yoga, and cooking.
