Most people who work in wildlife conservation got there without any real guidance on how to get there. You learn the ecology, you learn the fieldwork, and then you are left to figure out job searching, applications, and interviews on your own, usually while competing against hundreds of equally passionate candidates for a single role.

WildTeam has built a free course for exactly this gap. It is called Launching Your Career in Wildlife Conservation, and it walks through the whole process of finding and securing a conservation job, from working out which roles suit you through to assessing and negotiating an offer once you have one.

Why this matters for the sector

A strong conservation background is not enough on its own if you do not know how to present it well. The people who miss out on jobs are often not less capable than the people who get them. They are less prepared for the process itself: identifying opportunities, writing a CV and cover letter that get read, and performing well at interview.

That gap costs the sector good people. It also costs organisations. A course that closes this gap benefits everyone on both sides of the hiring table.

What is in the course

The course is free and covers:

  • How to approach a job search with persistence and a clear strategy
  • Choosing a role that will motivate you long term
  • Building a career pathway rather than just chasing the next open position
  • Assessing and strengthening your own competencies
  • Finding opportunities across the channels where conservation jobs get posted
  • Writing a focused CV and a persuasive cover letter
  • Preparing properly for interviews
  • Assessing a job offer and negotiating terms before accepting

It runs to 21 hours of interactive learning across 28 videos and 40 exercises and quizzes, and it comes with an 86 page best practice guide you can keep and use as a reference. Certificate holders are added to WildTeam's global skills directory and get access to a trainer's pack, so if you already work in career support or coaching, you can use the material to run sessions for others.

Who it is for

The course was built for three groups: people entering conservation for the first time and trying to land their first role, people already working in the sector who feel stuck and want a structured way to move, and career changers coming from outside conservation who are not sure where to start.

If any of those describes you, or someone in your network, the course is free to enrol in now.
