Most people get to five or six before running out: RSPB, Woodland Trust, WWF, National Trust, maybe the Wildlife Trusts. That's a reasonable list, and also a tiny fraction of what's actually out there.

We started counting properly for a different reason. The WildHub community kept surfacing the same problem from different angles: someone job hunting who'd only heard of the big names, someone trying to find a specialist partner for a project, someone building a funding case who needed the right niche organisation rather than the obvious one. Every time, the answer came back to the same short list, not because that list was accurate, but because nothing existed to check it against.

Counting the sector

We went through it properly: rivers trusts, county wildlife groups, bat and bird societies, marine charities, species specific trusts, alongside the national names everyone already knows. The total came to well over 300 organisations, and climbing, since the list is still being added to as more come to light.

The sector is far bigger and more varied than the handful of names that dominate search results and public awareness.

What's in the directory

Every organisation is listed alphabetically, from A Rocha UK through to the Zoological Society of London, with a short note on what each one does and a link to its website. It's not ranked, and it doesn't try to pick favourites. It's the fullest picture we could put together of who's working on UK conservation.

Where it's useful

• Job hunting. See employers you won't find by searching the obvious names.
• Partnerships and funding. Find the specialist organisation that actually matches your project, not just the one you'd already heard of.
• Understanding the sector. For students or anyone new to conservation, it shows the real shape and scale of the field.

It will keep changing

Organisations merge, rename, close and start up, so this list will never be finished. We would rather it stayed accurate than stayed still, so if you know of one that's missing, or one that needs updating, we would like to hear about it.
