We're building a new free course — and we need your voice in it
Do you remember trying to get your first conservation job?
For some people, the path felt clear. But for a lot of us, it was confusing and discouraging in ways that are hard to put into words unless you've been through it. There was very little guidance. Career journeys were mostly invisible. And it was almost impossible to understand what working in conservation actually looks like from the inside — the day-to-day reality.
That gap hasn't gone away. Every week, people all over the world are trying to break into this sector without a clear map. They're volunteering for free when they can't afford to, applying for roles they feel underqualified for, second-guessing whether they're even on the right path. Some of them give up. I think that's a real loss for all of us.
At WildTeam, we want to do something about it.
We're developing a new free course called Launching Your Career in Wildlife Conservation. It's designed to help people navigate that difficult early stretch and make progress once they're in. Like everything we build, it'll be practical and grounded in the real world.
And that's why I'm coming to you.
The most useful thing we can put in front of someone starting is real people like you, talking about how they got to where they are. The WildHUb community has rangers, researchers, project officers, educators, field assistants, managers, CEOs, people working in every kind of organisation in every part of the world. That range is exactly what someone trying to break in needs to see.
So here's what I'm asking.
Please pick up your phone or sit down at your computer and record a short video. It doesn't need to be edited or polished. Just answer these four questions, however they come out:
- How did you get to where you are now? (You don't need to start from birth — just wherever the conservation story begins for you.)
- What does a typical working day look like for you?
- What is it about you — your skills, your character, the way you work — that helps you do your job well?
- What do you love about your work?
That's it. Whatever role you're in, however long you've been doing this, it all helps. If you've ever wished someone had shown you a clearer picture of this work when you were just getting started, here's a chance to be that person for someone else.
Here is where you can upload your video.
Thank you so much— this course will be better because of you.
