I am a Senior Investigator at KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) and a passionate advocate for biodiversity conservation with more than 10 years of experience in this field. Prior to my current role, I served as the faculty head of Wildlife Education at the Kenya Wildlife Service Law Enforcement Academy. My research interests center around natural resource economics, ecosystem services matrix flow, marine ecosystem valuation, and analyzing issues in a changing world, such as trends in wildlife species population, illegal wildlife trade, unregulated and unreported fishing, climate change, marine pollution, community livelihoods, and ocean governance.
I have extensive cross-cultural experience collaborating with both international and local partners on biodiversity conservation initiatives. My interest in biodiversity conservation was sparked at a young age of 10 when I developed a deep love for nature, leading me to pursue a BSc in Wildlife Management at Moi University, Kenya. Later, I earned an M.A. degree in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management at Nairobi University, Kenya, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management at the University of Nairobi. These educational pursuits are driven by my passion to find solutions to biodiversity loss not only in Kenya but also globally.
As part of various professional associations, I am a member of the Conservation Finance Alliance (CFA), the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), Women In Marine Science (WIMS), and IUCN - Commission on Education and Communication Specialist Group.
My specific interest in Blue carbon ecosystems was sparked during my attendance at the Blue Economy conference in 2018, held in Nairobi, Kenya. I take great pleasure in exploring innovative ideas and mentoring future thinkers. Every day, I am deeply concerned about the future of humanity if the threats to our environment continue without restraint. Thus, my primary focus lies in implementing policies and regulations that prioritize and involve local communities in conservation efforts.
I specialise in communications and marketing for environmental charities, making ordinary people give a damn about and engage in environmental stories and campaigns - fuelling action and creating change. I work for an agency called more onion that helps progressive charities and non-profits have more impact through campaigns, fundraising and/or supporter engagement. My I love working with animal/environmental charities, as this is the area I'm most passionate about. I've worked for WWF, Greenpeace & Surfers Against Sewage, as well as grassroots organisations. As I'm neurodivergent, disabled, a carer and from a working class background, I'm passionate about making sure projects and campaigns are as inclusive as possible - we need everyone to change the world on the scale needed. Studying an MA in Anthrozoology part-time at Exeter (remote). My final project is studying vocalisations of critically endangered captive Javan Green Magpies and how we can use bioacoustics to inform welfare and understanding. Primate fan, but now falling in love with song birds. I have a BSc in Biology from St Andrews and won an Undergraduate Award for my genetics research. I live in the UK. Born in London, but living by the sea in Cornwall. Please feel free to connect on LinkedIn :)
I work for Conservation Nation we are a new non-profit that relaunched in late 2021 after a long, prior history of being Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, DC.
I head up the marketing and communications along with running the grants program. Our focus is helping to make the conservation field accessible to a broader group of people and amplify those voices through our grants, education and outreach programs. My background is in program management, marketing and communications but my passion has always been in conservation and I've had the opportunity to volunteer for several conservation organizations. My two parallel paths have intersected with my role at Conservation Nation.
