The UK's Next Banknotes Will Celebrate Wildlife — Have Your Say
The Bank of England has announced that nature, with a particular focus on wildlife, will be the theme of the next series of UK banknotes. Following a public consultation held last year, a shortlist of native UK species has been developed in collaboration with wildlife experts from across the country.
The shortlisted animals could become the central images featured on the new £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, replacing the current designs and bringing the UK's rich natural heritage into everyday life.
From 3 June to 3 July 2026, members of the public are invited to share their views on which animals should appear on the next generation of banknotes. The shortlist has been grouped into three categories, representing a variety of species and habitat found throughout the UK.
This initiative offers more than a redesign of currency. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable biodiversity of the United Kingdom and to raise awareness of the wildlife that shares our landscapes, rivers, coastlines and skies. By featuring native species on banknotes, the designs have the potential to spark curiosity, inspire appreciation and encourage conversations about conservation among millions of people.
Wildlife imagery on currency is not a new concept globally, but it remains a powerful way to connect people with nature. The species selected will become part of the nation's everyday experience, serving as a reminder of the importance of protecting the natural world for future generations.
At WildHub, we welcome initiatives that raise awareness of wildlife and foster a deeper connection between people and nature. We believe that celebrating biodiversity in visible and accessible ways can help strengthen public support for conservation and environmental stewardship.
The final design decisions will take account of public feedback, making this a genuine opportunity for people to influence how the UK's natural heritage is represented.
💬 Which species would you choose to feature on the next UK banknotes?
The consultation is open until 3 July 2026, and we encourage everyone with an interest in wildlife and conservation to take part and share their views.
