Doh, failed to post the answer fully and can't see how to edit the post, so here it is as a reply...
The main advantage of using trackers is having all of the project information accessible from a single overall location, making finding up to date information efficiently.
A disadvantage can be the burden it places on multiple team members keeping information up to date and the implications to the project if individuals do not keep it up to date.
