Volunteering at the British Ecological Society Annual Meeting 2026 (BES2026) is a fantastic opportunity to get behind the scenes of one of Europe's largest ecology conferences while making meaningful connections with researchers, students, and professionals from around the world.

Taking place in Birmingham from 14–17 December 2026, BES2026 brings together the global ecological community to share cutting-edge research, collaborate on solutions to environmental challenges, and inspire the next generation of ecologists. As a volunteer, you'll play an important role in helping the event run smoothly while enjoying the conference yourself.

What will volunteers do?

Volunteers help support a variety of conference activities, including:

• Assisting session chairs during scientific presentations

• Supporting workshops

• Helping at registration and information desks

• Assisting with poster sessions

• Providing directions and information to delegates

• Supporting event setup and close-down

Volunteers work approximately 50% of the conference, leaving plenty of time to attend talks, workshops, and networking events.

Who should apply?

The British Ecological Society particularly welcomes applications from people who might not otherwise be able to attend the Annual Meeting, including:

• Undergraduate and postgraduate students

• Early-career ecologists

• Individuals seeking employment

• Retired members of the ecological community

• People studying ecology or related disciplines without access to conference funding

The Society also strongly encourages applications from individuals who have experienced barriers to career development or are from underrepresented backgrounds.

Important information

Instead of paying the standard conference registration fee, successful volunteers pay a £50 refundable deposit, which is returned after the event, provided the volunteer responsibilities and Code of Conduct are fulfilled. Please note that volunteers are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel and accommodation.
