About Abbie Heimowitz
I joined Wildhub to connect with other conservationists with similar and new passions so I can learn and network!
I hold my BSc degree in Biology and Zoology and am looking to gain my MSc in Conservation medicine! I love working on zoonotic diseases and wild felids/carnivores the most as well as explore new countries.
I have done zoonotic disease work in Badlands South Dakota and also interned with GVI in South Africa and Madagascar. Volunteer work includes Kathmandu Central Zoo in Nepal.

Masters Programs and Tips
When I first introduced myself I mentioned going to India in March - after that incredible experience with Global Protagonists, I am for sure wanting to pursue my masters degree in conservation medicine, one-health and zoonotic disease transmission. However, I find myself hitting a wall lately especially with funding being so scarce right now.
My long-term goal is to be able to work abroad anywhere with wild felids (my focus species)but also travel. I run a travel blog and do some small art things such as native american beadwork, drawing, and diamond painting.
I have cold emailed a lot of professors, and found a decent amount of programs I could apply to but without funding I wouldn't be able to do so. How did you (if you aimed for grad school) figure out funding or schools? What are some good skills to have regarding some programs or job opportunities? have looked into african positions but I don't have my FGASA or NQF 2 training as I can't afford it.
Thanks in advance
Abbie

What is one lesson you’ve learned so far about entering this field that you wish you had known earlier?
That one is tough haha. I have to say one lesson I have learned is that experience and passion matter. I would not have gotten my seasonal job in 2024 if my interest and passion didn't show through.
