My name is Huruma David Mwasomola. I have a background in Wildlife Management, and I’m passionate about environmental conservation, research, and promoting human-wildlife coexistence. Over the years, I’ve gained experience working on various conservation projects focusing on wildlife monitoring, mangrove restoration, biodiversity surveys, and community outreach programs. With a master degree in Protected Areas Management, I am working in the wildlife conservation unit as part of my role at APASAT NGO. My role focus on data collection on wildlife, field assessments, human wildlife coexistence and local community’s engagement in conservation efforts. This includes project management, proposal writing for funding and team supervision. I am currently leading a project on Human-Wildlife Coexistence, specifically addressing coexistence challenges between communities and the Critically Endangered Red-bellied Monkey (Cercopithecus erythrogaster erythrogaster) in the Biosphere Reserve of Ouémé. I am leading the team to conduct primate population monitoring, assess the interactions between local populations and primates, undertake coexistence strategies through environmental education, alternative livelihoods, and non-lethal deterrents and enhance community involvement in conservation approaches.

I currently work as part of a unique partnership between the IUCN SSC and the Indianapolis Zoo as part of the Global Center for Species Survival. Throughout my career, I have focused on the role of zoos as conservation organizations, serving as a bridge between in situ and ex situ conservation. I am a firm supporter of the IUCN’s One Plan Approach to conservation. My range of experience provides a broad foundation to draw from and offers unique insights for problem-solving and partnership engagement. I have experience working for and with domestic and international conservation non-profits. My focus includes supporting the development of conservation skills, utilizing innovative tools, technologies, and approaches to tackle conservation challenges, and emphasizing the contributions of local communities to wildlife conservation. I am Yashvardhan Dalmia from India. Over the last 8 years, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of working on biodiversity conservation space in various capacities in India while liaising closely and learning from a diverse set of stakeholders including NGOs, local community groups, forest guards, and conservationists.
In my current role as Network Support Officer for the Satpuda Landscape Tiger Partnership (SLTP), I work closely with the Born Free Foundation UK to coordinate a network of NGOs and conservationists dedicated to protecting the forests and wildlife of central India through long-term coexistence projects.

I am a dedicated conservation scientist interested in bridging gaps between science, conservation, and policy to benefit wildlife and people. With 20 years of experience across career sectors, I have collaborated in diverse working groups to develop science-based conservation strategies that support biodiversity and stakeholder needs.
I specialize in the impacts of climate change and habitat loss on wildlife and ecosystem health. My work on migratory birds as bioindicators of changing seasonality in northern forests in the USA has informed critical initiatives like “Foresters for the Birds” and clean energy policies addressing the climate crisis. In the California Channel Islands, I led recovery efforts with a wildlife non-profit for threatened and endangered species impacted by habitat degradation from introduced species, resulting in species delisting. I taught field courses in sustainable natural resource management in New Zealand that incorporated Indigenous practices. As Director of an undergraduate field research program, I trained the next generation of conservation leaders.
I earned a Ph.D. in behavioral ecology, an M.S. in zoology, and a B.S. in zoology. My postdoctoral work spanned Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, enhancing my regional knowledge of biodiversity hotspots.
