Passionate about people and our planet. | Marine Biology Research, Communication, & Education | University of Cambridge PGCE Alumni | Ocean Conservation - Marine Programs Officer for ifaw (UK)
Hi! My name is Sophie, and I am from London. I am a marine conservationist and program officer for The International Fund for Animal Welfare (you may know us as ifaw!) I have been in this role since last September and if I could go back and tell 10-year-old Sophie that she really did grow up to "save the whales" she would not believe me.... it really is a dream come true! I live between the UK and USA, and my previous experience includes teaching college-level biology education, and in a university zoological museum institute, working in an aquarium on dolphin rehabilitation and sea turtle rescue, and now full-time as a marine conservationist for an international non-profit.
I am super enthusiastic about all things migratory marine megafauna - research, conservation and education, and my absolute favourite animal on the planet is the majestic Oceanic Manta Ray!

I joined WildHub because I have a particular interest in project management, particularly in how it can be applied in conservation initiatives. Project management is crucial for successfully implementing conservation projects, from planning and execution to monitoring and evaluation. I’m excited about the opportunity to leverage my skills in project management to drive impactful conservation efforts. Some of my experience in conservation in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya lies in:
•Lion tracking
•Monitoring grass species composition and biomass status.
•Monitoring population structure of threatened herbivore species, specifically the Grevy's zebra and Beisa oryx.
•Monitoring population dynamics of select predators particularly the cheetah, lions and hyenas.
•Mapping active and old abandoned cattle bomas around the conservancy.
I am keen to apply project management principles to streamline processes, manage resources efficiently, and achieve measurable outcomes in conservation projects. By integrating my passion for environmental sustainability with my project management skills, I aim to contribute to creating and executing effective conservation strategies that benefit both the environment and the communities involved.
My conservation journey began working directly with communities to promote coexistence with wildlife. My passion lies in empowering people to see themselves as partners in conservation, protecting the spaces and species we share. I hope to deepen my skills, learn from fellow conservationists, and contribute to a future where both people and nature thrive.
