From Ecosystem Conservation to Wildlife Sanctuary: Integrating Nature, Communities, and Sustainable Development in Indonesia
I have over fifteen years of experience in environmental conservation across Indonesia, working on tropical rainforest ecosystems as well as wetlands, including mangroves and peatlands. My work also involves community development and economic empowerment, ensuring that conservation initiatives create sustainable benefits for local communities. In addition, I have been involved in several carbon-related initiatives, including Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), where conservation efforts are linked with sustainable financing mechanisms.
Currently, I lead environmental conservation initiatives focused on wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and long-term care for endangered species. One of our flagship initiatives at Yayasan Arsari Djojohadikusumo (YAD) is the development of an Orangutan Sanctuary Island in Balikpapan Bay based on an ex situ in natura conservation approach. The sanctuary provides a protected forest habitat for orangutans that cannot be reintroduced into the wild, including dominant adult males that require large territories and complex social space. Rather than spending the rest of their lives in cages, rescued orangutans are able to live freely in a natural island ecosystem while receiving lifelong monitoring and veterinary care.
Implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Nusantara Capital Authority, this initiative reflects a broader vision of how a new capital city can coexist harmoniously with nature while promoting environmentally sustainable development. I strongly believe that cross-sector collaboration is essential to achieving long-term conservation impact, and I look forward to learning from and contributing to this community. Salam lestari.

Welcome to WildHub, Berkat!
I really appreciate the work you’re doing to create a safe, more natural environment for orangutans who can’t return to the wild - it’s the only truly viable approach to long-term care and welfare.
I’d love to hear more, what have been some of the key challenges in getting the sanctuary established and operational?
Also, would you be interested in connecting with one of our Conservation Catalysts for a short interview to share your conservation journey and current work in Balikpapan Bay?
