Hello Wildhub!

I'm Sally and I'm excited to be here and able to share experiences etc.
Hello Wildhub!

I have a long background of working with communities and their wildlife and environments in East Africa.
I currently work on strategies and development for the lasting coexistence between people and lions, with KopeLion in Ngorongoro.

I love learning from others and am equally willing to reciprocate.

Welcome to WildHub, Sally. I'd love to hear more about your work helping communities find balance with the natural world around them. What strategies are you helping to develop to protect both the community and the population of lions?

Hi Lara,

We work directly with the Ngorongoro pastoralists and they support their communities to avoid lions through monitoring their whereabouts, to find lost livestock most vulnerable to lion attacks, to help to treat livestock wounded by predators - preventing loss of livelihoods and help to repair and secure livestock enclosures.

We're also trialling a conservation incentives payment scheme, we work closely with people to remind them of cultural practises that keep them and familes safer, and we're about to launch new activities focused on increasing communications at all levels from elders to youth gatherings.

3 key areas of focus: reducing conflict, increasing tolerance and monitoring lions.

Hi Sally! A warm welcome to WildHub and thanks so much for sharing your introduction with us - it's great to get to know you. I was wondering which one of your experiences at KopeLion in Ngorongoro has felt the most energising to you. I'm always curious to learn what keeps people motivated in the conservation sector :) Thanks in advance for sharing and best wishes from the UK!

Hi Thirza,

For me the most energizing is getting to work with such a diverse team with a wide range of talents. The ability to track wildlife, to understand centuries of culture and medicinal plants, combined with GIS mapping, genetic analysis, organisational development, dancing, sharing banana bread and roasting goat!

It lends to great ideas from all angles and not being afraid to try things out and fail together.

Welcome Sally, great to have you here. I see you're enjoying the many facets of your work with the local communities, I was wondering if there are any added sources of livelihood aside their livestock and if you can assess their tolerance level with predators so far?
