Sustainability through fair resource allocation
My name is Nyamni Bless Gur from Cameroon. Passionate about protecting wildlife and restoring habitats, I work on the ground to monitor and assess great apes population and the threats they face, particularly the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees and the Cross River gorillas.
In our world where it's difficult to find a balance between maximum effort in environmental conservation and community needs, wrong allocation of resources affects the impact and sustainability of our conservation action.
The coexistence of nature and people relies on built trust and local empowerment. Investing our efforts and resources to strengthen local communities by increasing household incomes through eco-friendly sources is a sustainable method that guarantees great environment impact where people and nature thrive together.

Would you like to share more about your work on great apes? It sounds fascinating.
Thank you very much Akter!
I work on great apes population management in the Lebialem Highlands conservation Landscape, Cameroon. This landscape is home to the Iconic and Critically Endangered Cross River gorilla and the Endangered Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzees. My work involves field surveys to gather data on their population density and distribution and to acquire a baseline data on wildlife threats across three protected areas of the landscape.
Since 2016, the outbreak of the Cameroon anglophone crisis has led to unprecedented increase in wildlife threats such as farming and hunting, making conservation work more challenging. Despite this, I have had the opportunity to engage local communities in conservation activities through biomonitoring and promoting alternative Livelihoods through ERuDeF. Working with these emblematic species is challenging but rewarding. I'd love to know about your own experiences in your conservation work and your interest in great apes conservation if possible.
