Alan J. Hesse

Freelance Conservationist, author-illustrator, environmental and climate education entrepreneur, Captain Polo Academy

My conservation career started in 1992 when I helped set up and joined a University expedition to the Bolivian Amazon. What started out as a 3-month experience ended up being a life-changing inflection point that set my professional and personal course to the present day. My conservation experience was built bottom-up and hands-on, and includes field data collection and logistics, grassroots organization leadership and project management, community engagement and capacity building, M&E, training and behavior change, and lately climate education through authorship of graphic novels and other resources.
Beth Robinson

Consultant, Biodiversify

I'm a WildLearning Specialist with WildTeam, a bit of an odd job title. My main role is to design, deliver and organise both our online and class-based training courses. One of the best parts of my job is meeting other conservationists and learning about the work that they do. Before working for WildTeam I did a PhD in invasive plants and human-wildlife interactions. I find it really interesting to learn about the ways people interact with nature, both when nature is being wonderful, but also when it is being a bit annoying!
Adam Barlow

Executive Director, WildTeam UK

I help run a UK charity that builds the capacity of conservationists to plan, implement, monitor, and report on their work. I also have a fair bit of experience in tiger and sea turtle conservation.
Ryan Kinaid

Seasonal Countryside Ranger, East Dunbartonshire Council Post Funded by Scottish Water

I have had a few major changes in my life the past few years. I worked as a train conductor with Scotrail for 8 years. The hours were hard, the pay reasonable but no time to enjoy what I was earning. So when the window of voluntary redundancy appeared and after some consideration, I accepted. Fortunately, I was able to find a temporary job quickly assisting Applied Ecology LTD for a few months as an independent contractor, assisting with dawn and dusk bat surveys. During that time, I applied and was accepted for a wildlife rehabilitator position at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue trust. (HWRT) In Hessilhead, I worked with various species of wildlife over 2 busy spring and summer seasons. After working alongside inspiring workmates who came and went over the years, I realised there was a lot more in the wildlife care sector to experience and learn and I had learned everything I could at HWRT. With a heavy heart, I decided to leave HWRT and look to expand the variety of animals I could care for. It was then that one of my old workmates suggested applying to Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY) in Bolivia. This was a voluntary role and I was in charge of a team of volunteers. My payment would be a roof over my head and breakfast and lunch provided. Due to a corrupt election, civil unrest and road blockades started to occur across Bolivia. A lot of the volunteers had left the wildlife refuge so my arrival was a happy sight for the CIWY Machia team. I worked at the site for two months over Christmas and new year. Sadly, I received the news that a member of my close family had passed away suddenly. I made the hard decision to leave to return to Scotland, and to this day, I believe it was the right decision. I used my time wisely during the Covid 19 lockdown after I arrived back home in the UK. I have attended free online courses to expand my natural history and zoology knowledge and applied for highly competitive jobs (due to the increased unemployment rate currently) between my study time. I also returned to volunteering with a local adult volunteer group at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park (CMRP). I applied for a Seasonal Countryside Ranger post at CMRP and through recognition of my knowledge and work within the park I was accepted for this position. I was offered two seasonal contract extensions and a transfer to Gleniffer Braes country Park through CMRP’s association with Renfrewshire Council. Currently I am working as a Seasonal Countryside Ranger, funded by Scottish Water in partnership with Mugdock Country Park, located on the boundary between East Dunbartonshire and Stirling. Based mainly at the Milngavie Reservoirs (Mugdock and Craigmaddie), I have been given the exciting opportunity to establish the reservoir site’s first ever ranger presence, to work with local stakeholders, encourage fair use of the site in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (SOAC) and enhancing visitor experience, using my previous ranger skills and experience.
