Like biodiversity, geodiversity is an important element of the Earth's natural heritage whose intrinsic, cultural, aesthetic, functional, educational and/or scientific values must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
However, human activities also threaten the diversity of rocks, soils and landforms as well as the diversity of animals and plants living on Earth. Unlike biological species, geological or geomorphological objects do not reproduce and the deterioration of an object or site often results in its permanent loss.
