Databases

During a sabbatical year in 2020, I decided to change my worklife towards nature conservation and dedicate my skills in database development to that. So, I quit my job at Lund University and started a company  called Rubber Boots Data. I am now trying to find out who my clients could be and what they could need.

One way to do that, is to offer some pro-bono work to NGOs. So, if you think you could use a database, but lack budget, please do let me know. You could also go to join::table, where I registered as volunteer but where they so far don't seem to have projects in nature conservation. I will have about a day per week available. I work with database software called FileMaker, which runs on Windows, Mac and iOS. A server and webserver version are also available.

Besides changing my job, my partner and I also decided to move back to Costa Rica.

Funding expertise

When I registered yesterday, I noticed that an area of expertise is 'Funding'. Although I am relatively new to nature conservation, I used to be an academic with an interest in science funding and I do have a PhD on that topic. Now that I am getting acquainted with the world of nature conservation and its NGOs, I notice that funding is a big question and that there are quite some parallels between science funding and nature conservation funding ( grants, grant providers, calls, applications, projects, reviews, collaborations et cetera ). I may just write a blogpost about it in the near future. Yesterday, I got so enthusiastic about the topic, that I immediately started compiling a list of donors/funders. Have a look here https://rubberbootsdata.com/resources/funders-of-nature-conservation/ It's a start and I will keep working on it.

Hi Frank - welcome to the community and so kind of you to offer your data skills. In case it helps there is a free grant sheet on WildHub that lists about 200 funding opportunities. If you found others to add to the list you could give me a shout and we could work together to expand the list perhaps?

Hi Adam, that sounds interesting. Where do I find that sheet? I saw it mentioned somewhere in WildHub last week, but I cannot find it.

Hi Frank & Welcome to WildHub! Great to have you join! The sheet can be found in the Grant opportunities room under "About this room". Please also find the link here. Hope this helps and very interesting to learn about your PhD in fundraising! I may pick your brains about this at some stage, if that's okay with you :)

Hi Thirza, thank you for the link! I found it now and I wish I do not have a meeting coming up so I can get my hands dirty.

Yes, do feel welcome to pick my brains on funding.
