Thirza Loffeld

WildHub Community Manager, WildTeam UK

My background is mainly in species conservation, education and capacity development. I researched mother-young interactions in gorillas and chimpanzees, in captivity and the wild. After that, I worked for three years in Indonesia, where I developed and implemented youth ambassador and community engagement programmes on local and regional scales. I obtained a PhD on capacity development for conservation and work as Community Manager at WildHub and as a Lecturer in Conservation Social Science at DICE, University of Kent.

Syed Tanvir Hossain

Programme Officer, WildTeam

Hello everyone! My name is Tanvir and I am from Bangladesh. Currently I am working at WildTeam as Programme Officer. WildTeam is a conservation based organization mostly focused on Bengal Tiger conservation. Basically, I am from Forestry background which inspired me to do something for tiger conservation. Besides, I have completed my masters program in Development Studies. However, in spite of my conservation career, I have worked in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) field, Nutrition field, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) field, food security and livelihood field and so on mostly as Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer in my entire career. I have joined here for uplifting my knowledge to strengthen my professional career as well as to serve my insatiable thrust about knowing wildlife biology and conservation works from around the world.

Silvia Lopez Casas

Freshwater Ecologist, The Nature Conservancy

My professional career has been guided by my personal interest in fish as they are an essential part of river ecosystems that have a very important socio-economic role in the live of thousands of peoples which depends directly from them. During my MSc, I worked closely with fishers who taught me about the ecology of river systems with floodplains and the life of fish in those environments, in addition to showing me their importance for their lives and culture. My doctorate and last years research have focused on potamodromous fish (fish that migrate exclusively between freshwater environments) of the Magdalena-Cauca basin. I have described and understood the effects of regulated and natural water cycles on fish migration dynamics. I am deeply interested in the changes of their habitats due to human interventions, as in sharing all my knowledge with fishers and providing them with tools to better use and defend their resources. I am disturbed by the general lack of knowledge about native fauna and flora and about the effects of human activities in hydrobiological communities, which is why I firmly believe that conservation ecologists and biologists must go one step further and commit ourselves to scientific dissemination and Environmental education as necessary tools for the protection of our natural heritage. I studied Biology at Universidad de Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia), and a Master in Amazonian Studies at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Leticia, Colombia) within the research line of Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Conservation, focusing my research on socially and economically important freshwater fish of the Magdalena and Amazon rivers, respectively. I did my doctorate in Biology and Ecology of Inland Water Ecosystems between Universidad de Antioquia and Universidade Estadual de Maringa (Paraná, Brazil), focusing on potamodromous fish of the Magdalena-Cauca basin.

Sihar Aditia Silalahi

Project Leader, Sawfish Project Indonesia

I am a fresh graduate student from IPB University, Indonesia, with a bachelor in Marine Sciences. I have a strong interest in conservation, specifically in Elasmobranch conservation for sharks and rays. I am planning to pursue higher learning in conservation and hoping to develop and manage Sawfish Project Indonesia as my first time to lead the conservation project. The project will be performed in Merauke, Indonesia, to find science-based information about the presence of Sawfish in Indonesia, to monitor the population distribution, and to identify means to reduce targets and bycatch of Sawfish there. My biggest ambition is to become a who is capable of combining both science and social approach to protect Elasmobranch species in Indonesia.

Sabita Gurung

Wildlife Researcher , Small Mammals Conservation and Research Foundation (SMCRF)

I am early-career wildlife researcher from Nepal with M.Sc Zoology (ecology and environment) academic background. Currently, I am Post Graduate Diploma student at WildCRU, University of Oxford. I have experiences of volunteering in wildlife surveys ranging from reptiles, birds to mammals, organizing conservation events, hiking, national and international conferences, as Project Officer in studying pangolins and primates in Nepal, and leading independent project on owls and rodents. I have special interest in studying predator-prey dynamics and landscape ecology along with human dimensions of conservation. I love learning new skills, and enjoy website designing, video editing to learning data analysis. I enjoy interdisciplinary subjects which creatively connects diverse set of skills and ideas together. I also like to do illustrations specially of wild animals. I dream to create a wildlife art gallery where people from diverse sector meets for discussion on common goals of conservation. I love owls and cats. ^^
