Looking for remote internship opportunities.
Hello All,
I'm Priyank Shah, a wildlife biologist. I have recently graduated and looking for opportunities that would provide me some good experience on how the industry works, or what professional experience looks like.
My interests are in multiple fields of conservation namely Wildlife Crime, Human-Wildlife conflict and Development of In-situ and Ex-situ conservation strategies.
I have no experience at all so if there's people who feel they could help me provide such opportunities that would indeed help them and me as i would learn some valuable skills ad experience it would be great.
Thanks.

A warm welcome to WildHub, Priyank! It is great to have you join our community and good to hear you are keen to get some practical experience in conservation. What skills are you keen to gain specifically and what skills do you have to offer? Would you mind sharing where you are currently based and if you are open to hybrid internships as well?
We have both Job Opportunities and Training Opportunities rooms here on WildHub which you may like to keep an eye on, as we often post about internships opportunities in there too.
Enjoy exploring WildHub and please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.
Hello,
Thank you for the greetings.
I'm based in Guelph, Canada, right now. I'm looking for an online opportunity.
The skills I have are some basic skills what a fresher might have, apart from that I'm currently enrolled into Project management course for Wildlife conservation offered by WildTeam UK.
To elaborate what I'm looking, is to assist researchers or professionals working in the fields related to Human -Wildlife conflict, Wildlife Crime or Conservation strategies so that I could learn or they could teach me what a normal day in their job profile looks like, what are the skillset required and how they work with data, their thought process regarding the problem they are resolving and so on.
I know the description that I have given is very vague, all I want to say is to get some experience paid or unpaid that would give me the opportunity to know how conservation industry and professionals work. Like me being a graduate student still not being able to have a job within conservation sector because I don't have any substantial experience to show.
Great to hear you are taking the PMWC course - it's fantastic!
There are a few things I would suggest here, first do not sell yourself short! I am sure you have gained lots of skills during your studies, you must have worked in a lab, learned about experimental methods and data analysis tools, for example. Can you help with data analysis? What was your master's thesis on? Have you run experiments during your master's research? What kind of experiments? What kind of wildlife have you worked with? In my experience, if you approach someone being vague about what you know and how you can support them, it is really hard to get through them. When you apply for an internship or a job, you have to be clear about what YOU can offer. In conservation, internships and jobs are limited and highly competitive so you really have to play your cards well. One other thing is, from what you say, it seems that you should be looking for a research assistant kind of position and that's rarely something you can do remotely unless you are highly qualified. Are you interested in research and possibly working in academia?
My best advice would be to reach out to conservation organisations within Ontario that you share values with and whose work you are passionate about, and enquire if they have any vacancies/volunteer positions or if they'd consider taking on a fresh graduate to gain experience. Some organisations offer mentoring programs to help develop skills and connect you with other conservation professionals. They may have tasks for you to do remotely, according to your skills and knowledge. You could do the same by approaching individuals whose work you are interested in and ask if they are looking for an intern, but be specific about why you want to work with them and how you can help them with their research or project.
Here at WildHub we offer the opportunity to join our Conservation Catalyst Programme which is a great way to connect with other conservation professionals and share their work. This is a fully remote voluntary role. Perhaps of interest to you?
Hello,
Thank you so much for the insightful feedback. So the problem for me currently is I don't own a vehicle right now and most of the jobs or opportunities do require to have access to a vehicle, that's why I'm in search of a remote internship opportunity meanwhile I gather funds for my car.
Secondly, I don't want to join academia again. Like what I meant to say is I would like to assist someone who is currently doing their research or something as people working professionally won't be allowed directly to make me as as intern or something.
My masters was a course based program and that's why I chose it. So, currently this has been my problem that even if i get a vehicle, like as you said the industry being competitive I might not get a job straight away, that's the reason I want to build some experience.
Got it!
As I mentioned, keep an eye on our opportunities room if anything comes up and good luck!
Yes, Thank you so much for your valuable time and reply.
