About Lea Kaplani

Hello! I'm Léa and I'm a WildLearning Specialist with WildTeam. I help deliver a number of workshops with WildTeam, including the Grant Writing for WildLife Conservation workshops. I love getting to know all the workshop participants and learning from them :)

Previously, I was working with BirdLife International on an EC-funded project on Involving More Stakeholders in Forest Governance in Asia and the Pacific. I got to work with wonderful organisations such as the Haribon Foundation in the Philippines, Burung in Indonesia, Malaysian Nature Society as well as Tenkile Conservation Alliance and the University of Papua New Guinea. Education-wise, I have studied economic development, international relations as well as tropical forestry in the past.

Great article - I love bats! I never thought of the fact they are the first mammal to master flight. Fascinating. Is there anything I can do to entice them to roost in my roof? I used to have them then did a bit of work on the house and now they are sadly gone.

Hi Paula!

I’m not sure this is helpful or up to date but here are some ideas:

1.    DataLab/School of Geosciences Scholarships in GIS at the University of Edinburgh: This program offered one fully funded scholarship for the MSc in Geographical Information Science for the 2023-2024 academic session. The scholarship covers tuition fees and includes training and networking events. Applicants must have a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of Edinburgh and meet certain academic criteria. Maybe there is the same for 2024-2025?

2.  University-Specific Scholarships: Many UK universities offer scholarships for international students, including those pursuing postgraduate degrees. Check the websites of universities that offer programs in Geographic/Satellite Data Science for specific scholarship opportunities.

3. Chevening Scholarships: Funded by the UK Government, Chevening offers scholarships for international students to study in the UK. These scholarships are highly competitive and cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs.

 4.    Erasmus+ Programme: Although the UK has opted out of Erasmus+ post-Brexit, as an EU citizen, you might find opportunities in other participating countries with strong programs in your field of interest.

5.    Research Council Funding: UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and other research councils sometimes offer funding for international students, particularly at the doctoral level.

6.    Private and Charitable Foundations: Foundations such as the Rhodes Trust, the Marshall Scholarship, and the Fulbright Commission offer scholarships for international students. There are also smaller foundations and trusts that offer funding based on specific criteria.

Here are some useful websites as a good starting point:

1. **British Council – Study UK**: This is an official UK government website for international students. It provides information about studying in the UK and has a section dedicated to scholarships and financial support.

Website: [Study UK - British Council](https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org)

2. **FindAMasters.com & FindAPhD.com**: These websites offer a database of postgraduate funding opportunities, including scholarships for Master's and PhD programs.

   Websites: [FindAMasters](https://www.findamasters.com), [FindAPhD](https://www.findaphd.com)

3. **ScholarshipPortal**: This is a comprehensive scholarship search engine for students in Europe, offering a wide range of scholarships for different levels of study across various countries, including the UK.

   Website: [ScholarshipPortal](https://www.scholarshipportal.com)

4. **The Scholarship Hub**: A UK-based database of scholarships, grants, and bursaries, where you can search for funding based on your level of study, subject, or university.

   Website: [The Scholarship Hub](https://www.thescholarshiphub.org.uk)

5. **Prospects.ac.uk**: Prospects provides information on postgraduate study and funding in the UK, including scholarships, grants, bursaries, and fellowships.

   Website: [Prospects](https://www.prospects.ac.uk)

6. **EduFunding**: A database of scholarships, bursaries, and funding opportunities for students in the UK.

   Website: [EduFunding](https://www.edufunding.co.uk)

7. **PostgraduateStudentships.co.uk**: This site offers a compilation of funding opportunities for postgraduate study.

   Website: [Postgraduate Studentships](https://www.postgraduatestudentships.co.uk)

Additionally, some industry-specific scholarships might be listed on professional association websites related to your field of study.

Good luck!

Lea
